The Financial and Managerial Accounting Associate (FMAA™) is an internationally recognized professional certification offered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). It is designed to build a strong foundation in accounting and finance, with a focus on fundamental financial and managerial accounting concepts and their practical application in the business environment.
The certification covers five key areas: General Accounting and Financial Management; Financial Statement Preparation and Analysis; Planning and Budgeting; Cost Management and Performance Metrics; and Professional Ethics.
The FMAA™ is suitable for students, graduates, early-career professionals, and business professionals seeking to strengthen their knowledge of accounting and finance fundamentals. It also provides a solid starting point for building a career in accounting and finance and progressing toward more advanced professional certifications, such as the Certified Management Accountant (CMA®).

There are no strict academic prerequisites for pursuing the FMAA™ certification. Anyone with an interest in accounting or finance may pursue the certification. Extensive professional experience is not required; however, a basic understanding of accounting principles is recommended.  As for registration and examination requirements:

  • Registration: Registration is completed through the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the organization that awards the FMAA™ certification.
  • Fees: FMAA™ program fees are paid in accordance with the rates established by IMA at the time of registration and may vary depending on the region and available offers.
  • Exam: The examination consists of 80 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and has a duration of two hours (120 minutes).
  • Passing Score: The examination is scored using a scaled score ranging from 0 to 300, with a minimum score of 200 out of 300 required to pass. This is equivalent to approximately 67% for simulation purposes.

Upon completing the FMAA™ course, learners will have developed a solid foundation in financial and managerial accounting, with the ability to understand, prepare, and analyze essential financial information and apply key concepts related to planning, budgeting, cost management, and performance measurement. They will also gain a deeper understanding of the role of accounting information in supporting decision-making and the fundamental principles of professional ethics, enhancing both their exam readiness and career prospects in accounting and finance.
